Hair gel may look like a simple cosmetic product, but its transfer process is formulation-sensitive. The gel can behave as a non-Newtonian, shear-thinning material: its apparent viscosity changes under mechanical stress and may recover when the product is at rest. If the transfer pump is poorly matched, excessive shear, air entrainment or unstable flow can affect texture, filling consistency and batch changeover.

BONVE sanitary rotary lobe pumps are designed to provide controlled positive-displacement transfer for hair gel, styling gel and other viscous personal-care formulations. With the correct rotor, seal, speed and piping configuration, the pump can connect a preparation tank, buffer tank or IBC to a bottle, jar or tube filling line.


Why Hair Gel Transfer Requires More Than a Standard Liquid Pump

  

Hair-gel formulations may contain gelling polymers, carbomers, xanthan gum, conditioning agents, fragrances, oils or other functional ingredients. Their flow behaviour depends on the formulation, temperature, rest time and shear history.


Common transfer challenges include:

1. High or changing viscosity during production and filling

2. Shear sensitivity of gel structures and polymer-thickened formulations

BONVE Rotary Lobe Pump Solution for Hair Gel

A rotary lobe pump transfers product through two synchronised, counter-rotating lobes. The expanding cavities on the suction side draw the gel into the pump chamber, while the reducing cavities on the discharge side deliver it to the process line.

The non-contacting rotor arrangement maintains a designed clearance between the rotors and the pump casing. When the pump is correctly sized and operated at a suitable speed, the positive-displacement principle provides controlled flow without relying on high rotational speed to create transfer.

A VFD can be used to adjust pump speed for the actual product condition, suction level, discharge pressure and filling demand. Lower-speed transfer may help reduce unnecessary shear and aeration, but the final operating speed must be confirmed through the complete process data and, where necessary, a product test.

Working Principle

Personal Care Transfer Pump

 

Bonve lobe pumps basically consist of two lobe rotors, which rotate synchronously driven by a pair of synchronous gears in the gearbox. The rotors are driven by the main shaft and sub-shaft to rotate in a synchronous reverse direction, which changes the pump capacity, builds up high vacuum and discharge pressure, thus an efficient pumping is formed. Gap is kept between the rotors and between the pump casing, no friction, long life, no damage, no physical and chemical reaction to the pumped products.
